When it comes to gaming, I'm a platformer gal. My love of Cloud and World of Warcraft notwithstanding, I'd rather play Jak and Daxter or Prince of Persia or some such.
At E3 a trailer for Sly 4 was unveiled, and I became incredibly excited. Sly Cooper is a platformer -- my kind of game -- and I played and loved the first three. In a fit of enthusiasm, I ordered the Sly Collection -- all three games remastered for the PS3 -- and have played through them all again.
Now: one of the reasons Sly works so well as a game franchise is not only the game play and art, but also the storyline and characters. In particular, I enjoy the banter and unresolved romance between Sly (the thief) and Carmelita (the cop). Because, as you know, I'm a sap.
Here's the problem though (assuming 'problem' is an appropriate term): they're anthropomorphic characters. Or, more commonly, furries.
When my brain tries to contemplate writing fanfic for the series -- and oh, is it trying -- it goes all wonky. They seem human. They act human. But they have paws and muzzles and fur, and my brain goes: does not compute. I might be able to write something as long as I don't ever have to acknowledge that they're a raccoon and a fox (which the logical part of my brain is trying to ignore for a whole different set of reasons) instead of a couple of humans. But as soon as I have to mention ears or tails or fur I'll be in trouble.
I guess I've discovered a squick I didn't know I had? Maybe this is why I never wrote fanfic for Disney's Robin Hood, either.
In any event, it's annoying, because they're a great couple. They've moved into my head and demanded I write them a romance or two, and they don't seem to care that although the idea is fine (i.e. Sly and Carmelita need to have some WAFF), the details break me.
