Harsh critics and fun repros

The trouble with writing a story where characters dress up is having to describe what they're wearing.  I've been looking at clothes and trying to decide what to go with.  And I am amazed at how harsh the black-tie critics are regarding mens wear.  Basically, if it doesn't fit the pattern of the ages down to the number of buttons, cut of the collar, type of shirt, and type of tie it's not appropriate for "black-tie".  Which is sad because the tried and true is actually quite boring (I think).  This is not to say men don't look handsome in it... just that it seems there's little point in having more than one tux, or having more than one tux designer in the world.  It does explain why it's so hard to find cute clothes for a toddler boy, though (really, when I shop for my niece and nephew, I have trouble narrowing my choices down for her and finding even one thing that's not a cookie-cutter for him):  they're being trained to like wearing the same thing as everyone else.

It's no wonder we all thought the International Male catalog was a scream.  Because, honestly?  Most of that stuff we couldn't imagine any sane man wearing... it was just too out there.  The only time I ever saw something that didn't make me wonder what the designer was thinking was when I could imagine someone wearing it in a movie -- like Matrix style jackets.  Or a swashbuckler!  Real people, never.

Anyway... I am a bit stumped for inspiration.  On the other hand, I did find a repro of Seph's trenchcoat (fun), Squall's jacket (LOL) and Cloud's boots.

Trenchcoat WANT. The Squall jacket made me laugh - it's so outlandish even in the game, it's downright ridiculous in real life.
