Despite all the criticism romance novels receive, none of the recipients of the Bad Sex in Fiction award have been romance authors.  In addition, since the award's inception in 1993, it has only gone to a female author twice.

John Updike got a Lifetime Achievement award for it in 2008.

LOL, it's hilarious! People are always rounding women writers into a category that if it's a woman, and it's romance, there's sex, and it sucks. Squeeze me? Check yourself. Men are just as crappy at things women do too.

OMG Updike. Bad sex is an understatement, IMO, in his case.
I think romance novel's sex is just a little on the cheesy(unrealistic) side but not necessarily bad.

Most of the romance novels have pretty decent sex scenes, I've found. At least, compared to some.

And if you've never head of this book, or the Smart Bitches website, I highly recommend it. (I'm biased, admittedly; Candy is a friend of mine *gryn*) But oh *man* it's funny.

Bad sex scenes in silly books? Come my house. I've got a bag full of 'em. Thank goodness only some of them were bought brand new--most come from thrift stores, and they look like they've been used for nefarious purposes. At least they have better covers these days. The bodice rippers would be too humiliating to be seen carrying.... Still, I have a friend who in retirement took up writing bodice rippers and it payed for a lot of cool things. Downside was when she was in heart failure and needed some new valves, she had to work from her ICU bed to bring the current story home under terms of the contract. That was before computers. John Updike, huh? I stopped reading him halfway thru something...so many words to say so little and whatever got said was stiflingly boring anyway. As I remember it.... mc
