Commenting etiquette?

I've been trying to err on the side of caution, and just started wondering if I'm now going overboard. When people say nice things to me, I feel I should acknowledge that they took the time to do so. So I try and reply to every comment I receive. Is that good form? Bad form? I really appreciate that they are reading and leaving feedback... but I don't want to annoy anyone or anything. So what's considered the norm here?

By the same token, I'm also trying to comment more myself, and I can't help but think that's got to be a good thing. (^_^)
